Grove Common Lock Tail Bridge |
|
Grove Common Lock is the third lock down the flight and stands to the east of the A338 ( Map Reference Sheet 174 405898. Back in the 80s all that was left was the arch and that was looking precarious. Grant funds were obtained and using a photo of one of the other local bridges as a template the tailbridge was restored. It carries a public footpath from Grove to Charlton Heights via Crab Hill and also lies next to the canal towpath which is also at this point a public footpath.
The site is worth a look, but take great care as the sides of the lock are not in a good state. Apart from the restoration of the bridge no other work has taken place here apart from tidying the footpath occasionally.. Since the bridge was restored the canal to the north which was on an embankment has been planted with trees as has the field to the east.
