WILTS & BERKS CANAL TRUST

Led by the Wilts & Berks Canal Trust, the Partnership is working on the final stages of planning the restoration of the locks and facilities at Pewsham near Chippenham.

The derelict locks are part of the restoration of the 52 miles of the main line of the Wilts & Berks Canal from Semington, near Melksham via Swindon to Abingdon on the River Thames.

The proposal for restoration includes: Rebuilding/restoration of

• 3 Lock chambers
• Dry Dock
• Saw Pit
• Work Shop
• Lock Cottage

Dredging and refurbishment of canal pounds between the locks

Dredging of canal, and repair of culverts from the locks to Double Bridge

As well as the restoration of the canal and its structures , the Partnership is planning to set up the site as an education resource for the local community to demonstrate the 18th/19th century heritage skills and crafts used on maintenance of the canal and its working narrowboats in the context of a 21st century operational waterway.
