February 1877 The letting of Canal Wharves
To be let by tender, the following Wharves with the dues arising therefrom, together with the houses, gardens, stables etc also the company reservoir at Coate Water, together with the fishing and sporting, under certain circumstances to be obtained at the canal offices, Swindon
Melksham Wharf: with a powerful crane, dwelling house and stable (now in the occupation of Mr J.H. Maggs) from March 25th next
Lacock Wharf: with powerful crane, dwelling house and stable (now in the occupation of Mrs Elizabeth Banks) from June 24th next
Foxham Wharf: with houses and premises (now in occupation of Miss M.A. Hodgson) from June 24th next
Dauntsey Wharf: with dwelling house and stable (now in the occupation of Mrs Ann Greenman) from March 25th next
Hay Lane Wharf: with dwelling house and close of land (now in the occupation of Mrs Barns) from May 22nd next
Rushey Platt, house and premises, together with two lime kilns, stable etc (now in the occupation of Mr William Phillips) from March 25th next
Swindon Wharf: with powerful crane, warehouses, sheds and stabling, also a timber yard, with capital sawpits and sheds, also a close of pasture land adjoining a timber yard, also a piece of garden ground adjoining the road; any part of the above may be tendered separately, from March 25th next Also the Superintendent's residence with about 2 acres of pasture land adjoining together with a productive flower and kitchen gardens, small orchard, greenhouse, turkish bath, stabling for seven hunters and other conveniences suitable for a gentleman's residence from June 24th next. Three small closes of land adjoining the towpath between Swindon and Stratton and about four acres, more or less with immediate possession.
Bourton Wharf: with dwelling house and stable (now in the occupation of Mr John Dolman) also sundry strips of land from March 25th next
Longcot Wharf: with dwelling house, stables, cottages gardens etc ( now in the occupation of Mr H Whitting) from June 24th next
Uffington Wharf: with dwelling house and stable (now in the occupation of Mr Jos. Goodison) from March 25th next
A cottage and sundry peices of land between Grove and Abingdon (now in the occupation of Mr H Edwards) from March 25th next
Abingdon Tythe Barn Wharf: with dwelling house and premises (now in occupation of Mr J Beesley) from March 25th next
Abingdon Wharf: with dwelling house, powerful crane and stable (now in occupation of Mr R Curtis) from March 25th next
Coate Reservoir, 67 acres of water with dwelling house, fishery and shooting (now in occupation of Mr William Gosling) from March 25th next. NB - This lot will be let under certain conditions to be ascertained at the canal office, Swindon
A warehouse on the banks of the Thames at Abingdon (now in occupation of Mr William Bartlett)
A cottage and gardens at Abingdon
A strip of land at Abingdon (now in the occupation of Mr Edward Williams)
The last three holdings are not in the hands of the company at present, but will be let subject to further arrangements. The whole of the wharves will be let subject to the Canal Company retaining the right for themselves to load and unload any goods or materials, free of charge. Tenders are to be sent in not later than the first Monday in March addressed to the Chairman of the Company, Canal Office, Swindon.
