| Feb 1875 Riparian Owners Meeting |
|
A meeting of the riparian owners of this canal was held at the Queens Hotel, Swindon, on Monday.
Mr T. J. Heathcot presided, and counsel's opinion on the bill for the sale or closing of the canal having been read, it was resolved that it was desirable to at once lodge a petition against the proposed bill, with a view to protect the interests of thr riparian proprietors. A committee was appointed to act for the proprietors in the prosecution of the petition, and it was further resolved that, as far as it was in the power of the meeting to bind the general body of riparian owners, all expenses that have been incurred or may be incurred in the prosecution of the proceedings shall be borne in accordance with the interests of the proprietors, taking into consideration the length of frontage adjoining the canal, the length available for water supply, and all other rights, as shall be assessed by the committee. Mr Townsend, who represents some of the riparian owners of the Swindon district, while not opposing the last resolution, did not support it. Messrs Meek, Jackson, and Lush ( of Devizes ) were requested to undertake the proceedings on behalf of the riparian propietors, under the direction of the committee. Swindon Advertiser |
