Disappointing news was received by the Trust this afternoon as the Partnership bid for funding towards the Cricklade Country Way fails to make the final stage of the Lottery award.

Despite this, the Trust has gained a huge amount during the process and remains committed to the restoration of the North Wilts Canal as part of the Cricklade Country Way. Read the partnership press release by clicking here.

20th July 2006 Swindon Borough Council supports new feasibility study to return the canal to Swindon. The motion shown below was passed with full party support:

This Council believes that

 - for the regeneration of Swindon to be a success, we need to have an ambitious vision and make dramatic changes

- Swindon can learn lessons from other towns and cities such as Birmingham, Bristol and Liverpool, which has shown has shown that regeneration based around water can radically alter the image of a town or city and encourage further investment into the area

-  the restoration of Swindon’s historical waterways through the town centre will draw people to the town and help to realise the potential of the town as a destination of choice

The Council requests the Group Director of Environment and Leisure to bring a report to Cabinet on 7th February 2007 investigating the feasibility, both practically and financially, of the restoration of a canal through Central Swindon, which would be a major boost to Town Centre regeneration.

On behalf of the Melksham, Chippenham and Calne branch of the Wilts & Berks Canal Trust may I thank you all for raising £1,453,61 through our ‘Walk the Wilts & Berks’ and ‘Walk a Boat and Back’ event on April 23rd.

This is the best total by far from the three years that we’ve been doing the walk, and we’re also particularly pleased with the involvement of the cadets who all got into the spirit of the event.
